War and its parallels
On May 8, 2005, we will commemorate the end of World War II in Europe. While VE Day was today May 2, 1945, the official end of the war, final signature of Nazi Germany was May 8, 1945. Sixty years ago a generation fought for our future generations and their freedoms. I find it interesting that 2 years ago we ended a dictator's reign in Iraq and his influence on the Middle East. Interesting how two violent men met their defeats about this time of year.
More interesting are the parallels between the end of World War II and Gulf War of 1991.
In 1945, the US and Allied Armies made lightning advances and struck into the heart of Nazi Germany. In 1991, we liberated Kuwait. In 1945, we were poised to take Berlin and remove Hitler and possibly ensure a Democratic Germany. In 1991, we were ready to roll towards Bagdhad and drag out Saddam kicking and screaming. Both wars were declared victory. If so, then what the hell went wrong? Why didn't we take Berlin and why didn't we take Baghdad then and there? WHY? Who's fault was it?
The Liberals did us over in both conflicts. Why and How?
Well, in 1945, the libs managed to talk a sickened and dying President Roosevelt into agreeing to meet Josef Stalin and Winston Churchill at Yalta. Churchill wanted Roosevelt to back him in demanding Russia respect Eastern Europe and its right to freedom and self government. Stalin, he wanted a new Russian Empire to rival Peter The Great. At Yalta, FDR listened to politicians and young liberal and Communist leaning diplomats like Alger Hiss, into acquiessing to Stalin and shafting Churchill along with Eastern Europe and half of Germany. Churchill was left out in the cold, and the Iron Curtain was born. FDR had listened to his diplomats before, but a new breed of liberals and appeasers had take over. Europe's War with the Nazis was over, but now, the Cold War would begin as of the last Nazi machine gun firing off..... Despite the objections of General George C Marshall, Generals Eisenhower, Patton, Bradley, and even Montgomery; the sham peace won. Our troops stopped at the Elbe and we watched Europe be split and a war of wills start as a peace was settling in Europe.
In 1991, President George H Bush, acquiessed to his advisors and allies also. The Coalition had threatened to pull out if Bush and UK PM John Major sent their troops to Baghdad. France was a coward then too and clammored for the US and Allies to stop at Kuwait. Bush had promised to aide the Shiites in their fight against Saddam and his murderous army. Despite the objections of then Defense Secretary Cheney, Generals Powell and Schwarzkopf, the allies stayed put and a tyrant was left. Saddam slaughtered millions who had rebelled and we could only sit and watch (In Warsaw 1944, when Stalin ordered the Red Army to stop outside of Warsaw to let the Nazis annihilate the rival anti-Communist Poles who were supported as Allies, these allies were left ot the Nazi and Soviets wrath. Allied troops just watched this. FDR and Churchill were told to stop all air drops and even a commando/paratroop drop as the Red Army took over...) Like Warsaw, and Eastern Europe, we sat back or were told to and watch the fun the enemy had with our allies who rose against tyrants. This diplomatic fold left the Iraqis to pursue WMDs, mass murder, support terrorism, and threaten the stability of its neighbors. Like WWII, we folded and it caused more harm than good.
Unfinished Business had to be settled, years later. After WWII, it was Truman, Ike, Nixon and Reagan facing down and slaying the Soviet Dragon. It took years and lives to do so. The conservatives had to take care of the mess left by hasty diplomacy and cow towing to uncertain allies. After Iraq 1991, it was the US, Britain, Australia, and those who were freed from the Iron Curtain who cleaned up Brent Scowcroft and France's premature halt at the Kuwait/Iraq border. As usual American and Allied troops had to go back and stop the bad guys, when it could have been done the first time. After WWII- it was done with a nuclear shield and NATO facing down the USSR. In Iraq, we sent our troops back in and are still cleaning out Iraq. Unfinished business, again. We did not learn, apparently.
Like the ends of WWII and Iraq, the liberals were against any further involvement, except in their causes. However, after both, the real freedom lovers persevered.
In both wars, any Democracy and outbreaks of freedom were met with cynical skepticism. In post Cold War Europe, the libs were downing Poland and Romania. Both are now thriving. After this war, and currently, the libs are knocking the Afghan and Iraqi leaders abilities. However, inspite of violence and stepped up efforts and attacks, both nations are advancing despite the liberals.
Despite different circumstances and wars, we can come to one conclusion. Liberals make up peace as they go along, stop our troops from completing their tasks, and even shafting those deserving of freedom. Conservatives pick up and do better than where the libs left off, we secure a tree peace with strength, let our troops finish business, and let freedom reign to those who want it and need it.
Let's hope Iraq and the Shiites will be as forgiving, as Poland and other allies were after the end of WWII and the Cold War.....
