Not that the Pope’s passing was a surprise, we all saw it coming for a while; but his passing will leave a huge void. This Pope transcends religion. Pope John Paul II had the guts to make a difference, he was in the forefront of many of today’s social, economic and political battles world wide.
When was the last time you saw the Israelis and Palestinians agree on anything? They both praised John Paul II as a man who fought for equality for all. His message was peace.
There will be a struggle in the Catholic church to “relax the rules”, to make it easier to be Catholic in the 21st century. I do not see that happening. Dogma is dogma. The rules remain the same throughout times. 10 commandments have not be softened to be more applicable in 2005.
The Scared College of Cardinals are split on what direction the church will go now. Third World countries have been converting to Catholicism in rapid rate, but the church has been slipping in Europe and in North America. The new Pope will have to address those problems among many others.
For 26 years, it was crystal clear as to where the Church was heading, now we will have to wait for the white smoke to see the new direction.
That’s how I see it!
